About

Joan Reid is an artist, teacher and energy worker. She has been teaching art in high school as well as college for over 45 years, retiring from teaching in public schools ten years ago.  She is still teaching and offering classes and workshops in her studio in the Shirt Factory, in Glens Falls, NY.  As an artist, she uses a variety of art mediums and techniques including drawing, monotypes, and paintings. Joan has exhibited her artwork in numerous galleries in the Northeast, in group shows, nationally, and in solo shows. She has always been a promoter of the arts, involved with various art organizations and art boards, and has helped to start five galleries.

Many years ago, Joan developed a debilitating disease, and took a medical leave from teaching. She took many classes and workshops in alternative healing practices and cured herself over time… in spite of doctors telling her she would be in constant pain for the rest of her life.

Joan loves to help her students become aware of their inner abilities, to trust their intuition, and to learn about energy work. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Hawaiian Energetics practitioner, and dowser, she also maintains an office, treating clients in those areas. Joan hosts a weekly meditation gathering at her Studio #311 in the Shirt Factory, and teaches classes in meditation, Hawaiian Energetics, Reiki, dowsing, listening and trusting the messages you get, dream work, and connecting with your inner child through art.

For many years, she has been an instructor, and a director for The American Society of Dowsers (ASD) Basic School at the National Annual Convention.  She was awarded the Educator of the Year Award by the American Society of Dowsers, in 2015.

Joan received a BS degree in Art Education and a BFA in Illustration from Moore College of Art and Design, in Philadelphia, PA.  After working as an illustrator in Philadelphia for a few years, she moved back to the Glens Falls area to teach, and to raise her children.  Her graduate work was done through Skidmore, the State University of New York at Albany, Plattsburgh, Elmira, and Brockport, and through the College of Saint Rose. Joan was granted tenure in Art, for grades K-12. In 1994, she became the first teacher in New York State to be granted tenure in Computer Science.

Joan is a lifetime member of The American Society of Dowsers, and a lifetime member of the International Association of Counselors and Therapists. She is a member and past president of The Guild of Adirondack Artists, member and past VP of the North Country Arts Center BOD, member of the Hyde Collection, and a member and former board member of the Lake George Arts Project.

She regularly takes classes and workshops, continuing her education so she can keep current with alternative and complementary medicine.

Joan builds labyrinths, and has been a guest speaker at Fibromyalgia groups. She and her son are beekeepers living in northern New York.
